Our Story

Our Journey at SMARI

What started as a one-man consultancy has grown into a trusted leader in strategy-driven research, guiding clients through change for over 40 years.

SMARI was born out of client demand.

Our founder, Jim Ittenbach, began offering strategic consultation alongside research results while working at another company. Driven by his desire to use his strategic expertise, Jim eventually left that company to explore new opportunities.

However, his former clients continued to seek his research guidance, and what began as a side consultancy quickly grew into a full-fledged business. In 1983, Strategic Marketing & Research was officially founded.

Jim Ittenbach officially starts Strategic Marketing & Research, Inc.

1984

Opens first office 1801 North Meridian, Indianapolis, IN

1987

Moved to office in Lockerbie Square, Indianapolis Indiana

1989

Acquired by The Associated Group that became Anthem Insurance Company (now Elevance Health)

SMARI launches its first online survey! The era of web-based research has begun…

1996

smari.com was created

1998

SMARI takes back ownership and repurchases the business from Anthem Insurance Company

2000

Web-based research goes one step further with the launch of our first online focus group experience.

2007

Built SMARI building at 11708 N. College Avenue, Indianapolis, IN

It is time for a rebrand! We officially take on SMARI and trade out Strategic Marketing & Research, Inc.

2016

The generation of leadership emerges at SMARI with the announcement of a new president: Katie Ittenbach

SMARI wins “Best Places to Work in Indiana” from the Indiana Chamber

2023

SMARI turns 40!

SMARI becomes a Women’s Business Enterprise
